Eskom Expo for Young Scientists is an exposition, or science fair, where students have a chance to show others their projects about their own scientific investigations. At the annual prestigious Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair (ISF), selected students from 35 Expo Regions in South Africa then compete against the best young scientists from around the country and around the world.

Problems Faced By Eskom Expo

Current Judging Process

The Eskom Expo is currently having an issue with their judging process. The team responsible for the judging has complained that the current method used is time consuming and, overall, frustarting.

Project assessment is done via the pen-and-paper method, as a result, the tallying up of marks is also manually done, prone to mistakes and at times the reevaluation of marked projects.
It is extremely difficult to track judging as it happens which leaves the possibility of catching mistakes right to the end.
Projects are allocated to judges on the day and this prolongs judging.

iJudge Marking System

We can solve the above by creating a system called iJudge that will make decrease the time taken up before the judging begins and allow for mistakes to be caught and rectified throughtout the judging process instead of waiting until the end

The system will automatically allocate present projects to the present judges.
The system will ensure that judges are provided with a recommended marksheet before marking a project. It will calculate final marks and delegate medals automatically
The system will allow for convernors to be alerted as each project is marked by a judge and send a notification when project has attained conflicting marks; this will eliminate time wasted in tallying up marks, and reevaluation of projects. To avoid lengthy discussions and a smoother running, the system will be able to alert conveners of any problems or abnormalities that may arise.
